About Forensic Department
  1. First department in state to start MD in Forensic Medicine in Maharashtra i.e. in 1980.
  2. Till date more than 80 post graduates were passed from this department.
  3. First department in IGGMC to get MCI recognition.
  4. A web based ERP Software (Enterprise Resource Planning Software) for all medico legal reports which includes autopsy report, age estimation report, physical examination of sexual assault accused report, sexual assault victim examination report, death certificate, form no 4 and 8, viscera forms, histopathology form has been implemented.  It is the only centre in India which has such facilityBenefits of ERP software are as follows- 
    • Viscera form, histopathology form, provisional post-mortem report and death certificate can be submitted immediately.
    • Post-mortem report can be submitted in the department within 24 hours.
    • Soft copy of all medico legal documents can be preserved and can be retrieved whenever required.
    • Data analysis of any parameters can be easily done in a very short time which is highly beneficial for research purposes.
  5. Lecture hall with 250 student seating capacity with fully air conditioned and audio-visual aids as per NMC norms constructed in 2019

        b) BPMT Forensic Medicine – 3 Seats
  7. Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  8. Medicolegal autopsies – About 1800 – 2000 autopsies are conducted in each year.
  9. Age determination, Examination of alleged accused of sexual offences, Weapon examinations, Exhumations, Imparting training to Police and judicial officials etc.
  10. Department has played a major role in seeking approval for the Cadaveric Organ Retrieval Centre at IGGMC in year 2018.
  11. Department has separate seminar room for post graduate teaching, departmental library with more than 2000 old and new books of forensic medicine and also separate rooms for each faculty.
  12. A mortuary hall was constructed in the year October 2017 with three autopsy tables with water and underground drainage facility.  
  13. Department constructed cold Storage complex in year 2019.
  14. Three Cold storage cabinets with each having 6 cadaver capacity has been installed in 2020. 
  15. New mortuary complex construction phase one was started in 2020 after completing all administrative approvals. Mortuary upgradation phase one is now in ending phase. It consists of :
  • Routine autopsy hall with four fully equipped autopsy tables along with balcony for observation of autopsy with a capacity of 50 to 60 students with audio visual aids.
  • Walk in cold room for preserving 20 cadavers.
  • Cold storage cabinet rooms
  • Histopathology lab.
  • Demonstration/lecture hall with 50 persons seating capacity
  • X-ray room.
  • Record room.
  • Body weighing room.
  • Body noting room.
  • Doctors room.
  • Attendants room.
  • Sample preservation room
  • Office and store room
  1. The existing mourner shed was extended. The new extension of mourner shed is 12 meter x 6 meter with attached toilet and water facilities for relatives of deceased. It was constructed in year 2020.
  2. A new police chowky constructed in year 2019.

Future Plans of the Department
  1. Department had taken workshop of Police Officers and also Public Prosecutors.
  2. As this is a pioneer department to start post graduate course in forensic medicine in the year 1980 in Maharashtra. Department is aiming to start all the investigations related with post mortem examination that is histopathology and chemical analysis under one roof.
  3. Similarly Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for public prosecutors to help them to present the case before the Honourable Courts which may help to impart justice. 
  4. Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for registered medical practitioners to prevent medical negligence and also allegations of medical negligence.
  5. Department is aiming to conduct induction training of medical officers of public health department which will improve the quality of medico legal work and medico legal reports at the remote periphery.

Vision Statement of the Department
  1. Development of full-fledged histopathology lab in the department.
  2. Establishment of a 24 hours clinical Forensic Medicine unit in casualty of college.
  3. As this is a pioneer department to start post graduate course in forensic medicine in the year 1980 in Maharashtra. Department is aiming to start all the investigations related with post mortem examination that is histopathology and chemical analysis under one roof.
  4. As department is going to have 50 to 60 seating capacity viewing balcony for autopsy examination at the end of this year. Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for police personals to help them in criminal investigation which may help to impart justice. 
  5. Similarly Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for public prosecutors to help them to present the case before the Honourable court which may help to impart justice. 
  6. Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for registered medical practitioners to prevent medical negligence and also allegations of medical negligence.
  7. Department is aiming to conduct induction training of medical officers of public health department which will improve the quality of medico legal work and medico legal reports at the remote periphery.
