Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory
|
Molecular diagnostic laboratory established under Microbiology Department in IGGMC Nagpur in 2025,a special project run by tha Government of Maharashtra.The main purpose of a molecular laboratory at this government institute is typically to support diagnostics,research and the development of innovative treatments or solutions in healthcare. These laboratories use molecular techniques like RTPCR (Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction) to study genetic material (DNA and RNA).
The molecular lab can thus play a crucial role in improving public health, advancing scientific understanding, and fostering innovation in biotechnology.
Specific functions may include:
1. Disease Diagnostics: Identifying pathogens (bacteria, viruses and ) genetic mutations.
2. Public Health Monitoring: Monitoring outbreaks, tracking disease trends, and ensuring public health safety.

This is the only functioning laboratory for Viral diagnosis catering the samples from Institutes and Public Health Sector of Vidarbha region.
- The Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Department Health Research implemented the scheme 'Establishment of network of Laboratories for Managing Epidemics and Natural Calamities’ during 12th plan period up to 31st March 2017 and later on extended up to 3l March 2020. Now the project is extended up to 31.03.2026 by letter No. R-15012/31/2020,HR-VRDL,date 01.07.2021, office of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Department of Health Research, Govt. of India.
- Under this scheme, Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), Medical College level laboratory at Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College, Nagpur has been sanctioned on 07.11.2014 and laboratory became functional with initiation of viral Diagnosis from 01.05.2015.
- Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Department of Health Research (DHR) and Medical Education and Drug Department (Govt. of Maharashtra) signed on 18.12.2017 with acceptance of terms and conditions of scheme.
- As per the direction of Ministry of Finance (dated 17th April 2023), Government of India Treasury Single Account (TSA) System Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur of the CNA incorporated in 2013 for the scheme "PM-ABHIM Biosecurity Preparedness and Strengthening, Pandemic Research and Multi Sector, National Institutions and Platform for One Health (3992)".
Physical Progress:
- The infrastructure and equipment for Medical College level laboratory as per ICMR Guidelines are procured for establishment of laboratory.
- The contractual staffs of 07 posts are working in the laboratory as per ICMR norms and VRDL is running smoothly.
- The RT-PCR and ELISA tests for influenza virus, Dengue, Chikungunya, JE, Hepatitis-C, Hepatitis-A, Hepatitis-E, Enterovirus, measles, Parvovirus B19, Rota virus, Varicella zoster, Zika virus and corona virus are carried out in this VRDL.
- At present Viral Diagnostic laboratory providing swine flu, covid-19, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis virus, Human metapneumovirus, Hepatitis-C virus along with Neurovirology panel and respiratory viruses testing facility to patients of Vidarbha region under the guidance of NIV, Pune and ICMR, New Delhi.
- IGGMC, Nagpur is also sentinel center for National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP). Under this program Dengue, Chikungunya and Japanese Encephalitis diagnosis is done by ELISA test.
- The data of laboratory tests is regularly updated on the National portal of National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai and quarterly report of VRDL are sent to DHR.
- The staff VRDL published 10 research papers in indexed journals and presented their 06 Research papers in conferences.
- Research projects completed in this VRDL are 06
- CME conducted are 05 and Workshops are 03
- Training on Molecular Diagnosis and ELISA was conducted for various Government and Private Laboratories. The training was imparted to Laboratory In-charge and their technical staff and topic covered are Sample processing, manual and automated nucleic acid extraction, PCR technique and ELISA test. The number of participants was 52 from Government and 28 from Private Laboratories.
- Regular training is imparted Jr, Residents and BPMT students regarding molecular diagnosis of viral diseases.

|
There are 8 annual posts of postgraduates in M.D. Microbiology. Postgraduate teaching program includes seminars, journal club, slide seminars, assigned experimental work, in addition to posting by rotation in various sections of the department. They participate in research activities & various academic activities.Topper in MD exam since last 5 years with good placements for all postgraduate students .
Maximum MD Students of this institute have acquired DNB degree as well.

Undergraduate teaching is done as per MUHS curriculum. In addition to routine lecture & practical program, student seminars, are conducted. Students participate in Quiz, ICMR projects.
